WHO Collaborating Centre

for Modelling, Evolution and Control of Emerging Infectious Diseases

Biography

Jonathan Heeney’s research interests focus on cross species transmission of viruses, and the co-evolution of viruses and their hosts. Ongoing projects include the impact of retroviruses and non RT encoding RNA viruses (i.e. arenaviruses) on evolution, the search for novel hepatitis viruses, the dynamics of noroviruses, and asymptomatic immune suppressing viral infections that facilitate bacterial co-infections. The LVZ is a BSL-3 facility and translates its knowledge to rationally design novel vaccines for the prevention of diseases caused by notoriously variable viral pathogens.
